The date for the U.S. Premiere of Adwa, Haile Gerima's new film, is Saturday, November 20, 1999 at the Lincoln Theater in Washington D.C. The reception is at 6:00 pm and the film starts at 7:30pm. Advance tickets are $25.00. Don't miss this historic occasion, the unveiling of Adwa; a film about the landmark victory of Ethiopia over Italy - making Ethiopia the only country in Africa that was not colonized during Europe's scramble for Africa. Ethiopian children who have been raised within the blanket of a national dignity woven by the gallantry of the men and women who fought and won this battle have always celebrated this victory.

The battle was fought in 1896. Haile Gerima grew up within this cultural context and has been determined to share this victory with the world, so that we all may claim this African triumph as our own. Adwa - An African victory can now take its rightful place as part of the African heritage upon which we raise our children. Empress Taytu, King Menelik - Ethiopian nobility and thousands of nameless heroes that led the fight can now be common household names along with Nat Turner, Harriet Tubman, Shaka Zulu, Queen Nzinga and the many other freedom fighters.

Please note that the late Congressman Mickey Leland and Sister Jember will be honored at the premiere.
