December 2002
Week of December 20th thru December 27th

One Band,

One Man,

One Day

This is probably the first time that there has been 3 extraordinary films directed by African-Americans in the month of December. Drumline, directed by Charles Stone III, paved the way last weekend by having the highest grossing average per theater. In his first outing as a director, Denzel Washington guides the electrifying Derek Luke in Antwone Fisher, a powerful and uplifting film. And Spike Lee is back with a bold, powerful, and dramatic film with 25th Hour. Go out and support three great films by 3 gifted directors.

Till next time,
the blackfilm.com crew

Antwone Fisher
Denzel Washington offers us a Black man’s coming of age story with the grace and honesty that any of his peers would be hard pressed to match. For his directorial debut, Washington chose the heartwarming story of Navy Seaman Antwone Fisher (played by Derek Luke) who, as an adult, faces the demons that haunt him from his childhood.

25th Hour
The 25th HOUR is based on a book by David Benioff, and Director Lee has done a brilliant job of bringing this story to the big screen using elements of New York City as secondary characters to go along with the amazing acting by the entire cast, specifically Edward Norton. It is clearly one of the best films of 2002.

Narc
Director Joe Carnahan’s tale of a narcotics officer’s struggle to keep his distance from the dangerous trappings of life undercover.

Joy
"Joy", both heartwarming and thought proving, explores the impact of misplaced authority and misguided justice, and yet leaves the viewer with a sense of hope and purpose.

Maid In Manhattan
Maid in Manhattan is a delightful film that will remind all that dreams can be played out, onscreen of course.

For those who want to see Capt. Picard at the helm for one last fight, “Nemesis” offers the most adventurous and emotional scenes ever displayed since Capt. Kirk fought Khan in “The Wrath of Khan.”
