Festival celebrates 10th Anniversary with Waist Deep and Dirty Laundy amongst its slate.
 
URBANWORLD VIBE FILM FESTIVAL CELEBRATES 10th ANNIVERSARY

AND

ANNOUNCES 2006 SLATE

Opening Night World Premiere of VH1’s “Last Days of Left Eye”

(New York, NY)—The Urbanworld VIBE Film Festival, celebrating its 10th anniversary, today announced the roster for official feature, documentary, short film and music video selections, as well as special screenings. Urbanworld, screening 70 films this year, is the largest internationally competitive festival dedicated to the exhibition of independent cinema by and about people of color and will take place in New York City, June 21-25, 2006.

The 2006 slate will headline the world premiere of VH1’s Last Days of Left Eye, a vibrant documentary recounting the life of Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes, as well as screen Focus Feature’s Waist Deep, starring Tyrese Gibson, Meagan Good, and The Game. Urbanworld will also present a special screening of Official Sponsor Wal-Mart’s The Will to Survive – The Story of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, which explores the past, present, and precarious future of the Gullah/Geechee Nation and offers a rare glimpse into the soul of Georgia’s Sapelo Island, as well as a special screening of Shaft, in honor of the film’s late director Gordon Parks.

“The Urbanworld VIBE Film Festival is not only celebrating its 10th anniversary, but is presenting some of the most dynamic creative work from across the globe in honor of this important milestone,” said Stacy Spikes, founder of Urbanworld. “From our independent films to the big studio premieres, this year’s slate represents the best of urban filmmaking featuring untold stories from a unique perspective. We invite film fans everywhere to share in the celebration of its diversity.”

Highlights of Urbanworld VIBE Film Festival 2006 include:

Opening Night Premiere of VH1’s Last Days of Left Eye, directed and produced by Lauren Lazin;
Closing Night Screening of Half Nelson, directed by Ryan Fleck, starring Ryan Gosling, Anthony Mackie, and Shareeka Epps;
Special screening of Waist Deep, directed by Vondie Curtis Hall, starring Tyrese Gibson, Meagan Good, and Larenz Tate
Premiere of Dirty Laundry, directed By Maurice Jamal, starring Rockmond Dunbar, Loretta Divine, Jenifer Lewis, Terri J. Vaughn, and Sommore;
Special screening of Shaft, directed by Gordon Parks, starring Richard Roundtree;
Special screening of Purple Rain, directed by Albert Magnoli, starring Prince.


 
All festival screenings, except for the opening night premiere, will be held at the AMC Loews 34th Street Theaters.  The opening night premiere will take place at AMC Magic Johnson on 125th Street in Harlem.
