Synopsis:
In an open field on the outskirts of Los Angeles, the discovery of a dead girl reverberates like a scream through the lives of complete strangers linked by her brutal murder. Each is running from their own dark secret that has torn their families apart and left them psychologically fractured. Arden (Toni Collette) lives with her abusive elderly mother (Piper Laurie), a virtual prisoner in her own home. Thrust into unwanted celebrity status by the media after she discovers the dead girl, she seeks comfort in the arms of Rudy (Giovanni Ribisi), a grocery clerk. The pair speculate that the distinctive slash marks on the victim's body might be the work of the infamous 405 Freeway killer.

At the county morgue, Leah (Rose Byrne), a medical examiner, is dead certain that similar birthmarks prove the body is her sister, abducted years earlier. With final closure and able to move on, she begins a romance with Derek (James Franco), a sympathetic co-worker. But the dental records fail to match. Leah's mother, Barbara (Mary Steenburgen), vows to keep hope that her daughter is still alive.

When police identify the dead girl as a runaway named Krista (Brittany Murphy), her mother, Melora (Marcia Gay Harden), visits Los Angeles in search of answers. She learns from Krista's roommate Rosetta (Kerry Washington) that Krista turned to prostitution to support her baby daughter - hoping to start a new family, free from the nightmares of her past. When Melora is united with her granddaughter, hope is reborn from the ashes of despair.

In flashback, events accelerate, leading to the last day of Krista's life. A woman (Mary Beth Hurt) finds evidence that her philandering husband (Nick Searcy) may be a serial killer and agonizes whether to inform the police. Across town, Krista is happily making plans to celebrate her daughter's birthday. But her destiny lies elsewhere. When Krista's motorcycle breaks down on her way to see her daughter, a kind stranger offers her a ride...
