Angela Bassett will co-star with Tyler Perry in Lionsgate Films' "Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns."
This is Perry's fifth film for the studio and his fourth as director. Production begins this summer at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. "Browns" is slated for release early next year.
In this story about love and family, Bassett will play Brenda, a single mother living in inner-city Chicago who takes her family to Georgia for the funeral of her father, whom she never met. There, she is introduced to the Browns, her father's fun-loving, crass Southern clan. Brenda also finds romance along the way.
The story is adapted by Perry from his stage play "Meet the Browns." Perry will portray Madea and Uncle Joe in the film.
Bassett was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Tina Turner in "What's Love Got to Do With It." Her credits include Lionsgate's "Akeelah and the Bee" and the Walt Disney Co.'s "Meet the Robinsons."
Bassett is repped by CAA, Untitled Entertainment and Miller & Pliakas.
Lionsgate's "Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?" is slated for a Nov. 16 release
