CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF casting news
Chiwetel Ejiofor and Thandie Newton to star in London production
November 18, 2008
Initially reported by Blackvoices two months ago as something that was in development, Blackfilm.com has confirmed through producer Stephen Byrd that Chiwetel Ejiofor and Thandie Newton will play the roles of Brick and Maggie the Cat, respectively, in the London production of 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof'.
Debbie Allen will again direct the play, and James Earl Jones and Phylicia Rashad will travel overseas and reprise their roles as Big Daddy and Big Mama.
No stranger to the theater world having received the 2000 London Evening Standard Theatre Award for Outstanding Newcomer, Ejiofor returned to stage this year and won the Olivier Award for his performance in 'Othello.' This is Newton's theater debut.
The Broadway show had a successful run at the Broadhurst Theatre this summer with director Debbie Allen, Jones, Rashad, Anika Noni Rose and Academy Award nominee Terrence Howard.
According to Byrd, the film adaptation of 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' has been scrapped until further notice.
