Variety states that Steve McQueen, who won the Camera d’Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival for the Bobby Sands pic “Hunger,” is set to direct Chiwetel Ejiofor in “12 Years a Slave,” which Brad Pitt’s Plan B shingle is producing.
Indie pic tells the true story of Solomon Northrup, a New York citizen who was kidnapped in Washington in 1841 and rescued from a cotton plantation in Louisiana in 1853.
McQueen has been developing the project for some time and co-wrote the script with John Ridley (“Red Tails”).
Plan B’s Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner are set to produce the film, which is expected to start production early next year. CAA is arranging financing for the pic and representing U.S. rights.
McQueen’s sex addiction drama “Shame,” starring Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, and Nicole Beharie is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Ejiofor, who recently starred in “Salt” and “2012,” also plays a slave opposite James Caviezel in Annette Haywood-Carter’s indie “Savannah.”
