Actress Jasmine Guy led the line up of celebrities who attended the red carpet premiere in Los Angeles on August 1st for the short film Mulatto Saga, which will air on network affiliates, independent and cable stations throughout the U.S. from Aug. 4 to October 3, 2012.
Following the screening of Mulatto Saga and its sequel Juliette Fairley‘s Mulatto’s Dilemma at the Mayme Clayton Museum, Guy moderated a Q and A about the film, interracial relationships and the sometimes hairy task of being bi-racial.
“I think the film is fresh. I grew up hating the word “mulatto” but I’ve learned to embrace it,” Guy said about the film. Guy is best known for her role as Southern belle Whitley Gilbert in the Cosby TV show spinoff A Different World that she starred in along with Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer, and Jada Pinkett Smith.
The film Mulatto Saga will begin its national two month rotation on August 4 on FOX-TV in Nashville at 3pm and Lansing, Michigan at 6pm as part of Frank Badami’s African American Short Films Showcase.

Directed by Spike Lee’s assistant director Michael Pinckney and based on the stage play directed by filmmaker Charles Burnett, Mulatto Saga stars Juliette Fairley, Cassidy Knight, Kaylee Souther and Yacine Simpore.
Fairley is currently casting her third short film called Juliette Fairley’s Diary of a Mulatto Bride and raising funds for production by selling a DVD of Mulatto Saga and its sequel Juliette Fairley’s Mulatto’s Dilemma on Amazon.com starting August 9, 2012. “I am creating content that reflects the interracial family I was raised in because I believe there are plenty other bi-racial people out there who want to see their mixed race stories on TV and film as much as I do,” said Fairley.
