Last night, Blackfilm.com attended the opening night for the 16th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival, held at the AMC 34th theater in New York City.

The Opening Night film for the festival was the BET Premiere Cinema film ‘Being Mary Jane,’ which was created and written by Mara Brock Akil and directed by Salim Akil.

Along with the Akils, in attendance was the star of the film, Gabrielle Union, along with her co-stars Richard Brooks and Tika Sumpter, and casting director Tracy ‘Twinkie’ Byrd.

Mary Jane Paul happens to be part of a growing American statistic – the single, black female. Although this successful television news anchor does not have a family to call her own, she does have parents, brothers, nieces and close friends to keep her well-balanced as she manages her life as a mature single woman. Mary Jane may report on everyone else’s lives every night on the evening news, but now we will pull the curtain back and see how it feels “BEING MARY JANE.”

After the screening, a Q & A was held with the cast and moderated by Essence’s Entertainment Director Cori Murray before everyone headed to the Hotel Gansevoort for the afterparty.
