Viola Davis talks Won’t Back Down, Film Choices, and Upcoming Projects

Coming out this week isWon’t Back Down,’ which stars Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis in a film about two determined mothers, one a teacher, who will stop at nothing to transform their children’s failing inner city school. Facing a powerful and entrenched bureaucracy, they risk everything to make a difference in the education and future of their children.

Directed by Daniel Barnz, the film also stars Holly Hunter, Ving Rhames, Rosie Perez, Oscar Isaac, Lance Reddick, Dante Brown, Bill Nunn, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.

For Davis, this is her first leading role since she was Oscar nominated for Best Actress in ‘The Help.’ In less than five years, the South Carolina native has racked up an impressive amount of good worked that resulted in several awards and nominations. Not only has she received two Oscar nominations, one for Best Supporting Actess (2008′s ‘Doubt’) and Best Actress (2011′s The Best Actress), but Davis also won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play opposite Denzel Washington in 2010′s ‘Fences.’

Coming up next for Davis is the romantic fantasy film ‘Beautiful Creatures’ and the big screen adaptation of the sci-fi novel ‘Ender’s Game.’ She also plans to make the biopic on Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, who was the first African American elected to the Texas Senate and the first Southern black female elected to the United States House of Representatives.
