black superheroesWith Halle Berry as Storm in the X-Men movies, Don Cheadle as War Machine in Iron Man 2 and 3, Idris Elba as Heimdall in the Thor, Anthony Mackie as The Falcon in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ and Netflix gearing up to do series on Luke Cage, the only prominent Black superhero left on the table that hasn’t been discussed for film or TV as of late is Black Panther.

As Marvel’s Phase Two slate runs through November 2015, there’s no telling if a Black Panther film will ever be greenlit. Over the years, we’ve read and heard from actors (Morris Chestnut), directors (John Singleton), and producers (Reginald Hudlin) about making the film and what they wanted to see with the character.

MOS Premiere - Chadwick BosemanWhile promoting his latest film, Draft Day, Chadwick Boseman, who starred in the blockbuster hit ‘42‘ and has the upcoming James Brown biopic ‘Get On Up‘ due in the summer, spoke exclusively with Blackfilm.com about whether he could play Black Panther. At first he was a bit coy in his response as if he knew he would be asked about this at some point, but then gave some thought to what he thinks would make him take the role if ever greenlit.

Could you see yourself playing Black Panther?

Chadwick Boseman: I could see myself doing anything in terms of comic book, action, or anything like that. Black Panther, in particular, I’m not going to answer that.

If not, then which character?

Black PantherCB: Let me put to you this way. If it’s character driven, I’ll do it. As long as it’s character driven, I would love to do it. If it’s just you in a suit and you with powers, then it doesn’t interest me, no matter how big it is. As long as it’s character driven, I’m totally into it. If they could figure out how to do Black Panther and make it fit the original or adapt to the times we’re in now and be new and innovative and be character driven and has the sense of what the comic book is supposed to be, but not bound by it, then yes, of course, I would want to do it.

As he finished speaking on the record, he asked if folks wanted to see a Black Panther film and I said yes. Then he asked, “What about Green Lantern?”

Time ran out before I could follow up on that question, but that would be interesting if Boseman were cast as Green Lantern as a reboot should producers decide to go with the John Stewart character.

Green Lantern John Stewart Warner Bros.  produced the last ‘Green Lantern’ with Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. The film did about $219M worldwide, which is not good compared to other superhero films of late. Should the studio decide to do a new Green Lantern film, Boseman would be great in the role, or they could add him to the ever growing lineup other superhero film ‘Batman Vs Superman,’ which already has the characters of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman. There’s still lots of time for anything to happen since that film was pushed back to May 6, 2016.

F*** YEAH! I would kill to see Chadwick Boseman as the main Green Lantern of the DCCU going forward. Now this needs to happen.

In fact, if John Stewart isn’t the main Green Lantern in the DCCU, then I don’t care about the DCCU.
