Posted by Wilson Morales

February 24, 2017 is giving away to Four (4) winners each a $25 iTunes Gift Card to purchase a Season Pass to VH1’s NEW Original Scripted Series, THE BREAKS!

You can download iTunes and watch the show on an iPhone, iPad, iPad touch, Mac, PC and on Apple TV. You can also purchase Season Pass for VH1’s THE BREAKS now on iTunes

The series premiered for last Monday, February 20th at 9PM ET/PT.

The movie’s original cast (Afton Willamson, Wood Harris, Mack Wilds, Antoine Harris, David Call, Daisha Graf, and William Jackson Harper) are back along with the newest additions Melonie Diaz, Sinqua Walls, Ali Ahn, Dave East and Teyana Taylor.

Also added to the cast are Gloria Reuben, who will portray Malthuas “Mattie” Taylor, a powerful and polished department head at a major record company; and rapper, actor Tip “T.I.” Harris, who will play Paul Anders, a powerful lawyer who comes to Barry Fouray’s (Wood Harris) defense after a public scandal. Teyana Taylor makes a grand introduction as female rapper “Imani X”

Guest stars will include Kim Wayans as Ella, Imani X’s (Teyana Taylor) mother or more accurately – her “Momager.” Lela Rochon plays Marie Jones, Nikki’s (Afton Williamson) mother who -like Nikki – is not always forthcoming with the truth, but for very different reasons than her daughter. Dave East plays Hashim, a rapper who performs with Imani X. Hassan Johnson plays Det. Anthony Purdell, a detective investigating Ahm (Antoine Harris) and his gang affiliations.

Returning to reprise their roles from the film are Cliff ‘Method Man’ Smith as Darryl Van Putten, Sr. DeeVee’s (Mack Wilds) perennially irritated, judgmental father. William Jackson Harper plays Stephen Jenkins, Barry’s put-upon right hand at Fouray Management. Russell Hornsby plays Sampson King, the smooth-talking radio host at WPPS who hates rap music. J. Bernard Calloway plays Gordie Charlon, the road manager for Fouray Management and one of Barry’s (Wood Harris) oldest friends. A-F-R-O plays D-Rome, a star artist on Fouray’s roster who has greatness in him; and De’Adre Aziza plays Tamika Grant, the receptionist at Fouray Management who suspects Nikki’s motives.

Mann, Charnas, Strauss, Bill Flanagan and Darren Goldberg are executive producers on “The Breaks.” Maggie Malina, Chris McCarthy and Amy Doyle will serve as executive producers for VH1.

Inspired by the book by journalist Dan Charnas entitled The Big Payback, a narrative history of the hip-hop business, “The Breaks” is written, directed and executive produced by Seith Mann (“The Wire,” “The Walking Dead,” “Homeland”) with a story by Mann and Charnas. John J. Strauss (“Mozart in the Jungle”) is joining as Executive Producer for the series. The film followed three young friends fulfilling their hip hop dreams in New York City in 1990.

In the film that aired in January 2016, “The Breaks” chronicled the journey of Nikki (Afton Williamson), David (David Call) and DeeVee (Mack Wilds), three friends united by their love of hip-hop, as they work to make their big mark in the music industry. The film traveled viewers back to the summer of 1990 in New York City where the music industry’s artists and hustlers intersected in the dance clubs and the street corners of the still crime-ridden city. Nikki Jones is a brilliant recent grad who abandoned a scholarship to law school to pursue her dream of becoming a record exec. Her boyfriend, David Aaron (Call), is the scrappy son of a legendary music producer (Evan Handler) who is unwilling to rest on his father’s laurels and notorious reputation. DeeVee is an aspiring producer on the hunt to find the next big rapper on the come-up.

The Breaks 11 Wood Harris

Nikki fast talked her way into an internship at the premier hip-hop company, Fouray Entertainment and caught the eye of the label’s infamous founder, Barry Fouray (Wood Harris) while David struggled at the city’s top R&B radio station whose celebrity DJ refused to program real hip-hop. Meanwhile, DeeVee returned to his roots in the Fort Greene projects to scout for talent and ran into Ahm (Antoine Harris), a drug dealer with a lyrical gift whose talent brought them all to the next level. But they will soon discover lives can be broken as fast as legends can be born.

The series will continue to explore their triumph and heartbreak trying to make their mark in a new and complex hip hop culture.
