At D23, fans have one thing on their mind – Star Wars: The Last Jedi aka Star Wars: Episode VII.. The franchise continues the episodic story of Rey (Daisy Ridley), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), and Finn (John Boyega), as they face-off against returning villains Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), and Captain Phasma in Star Wars Episode VII: The Last Jedi.

On the main stage, director Rian Johnson takes the stage with actress Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Gwendolyn Christie, and Mark Hamill. Newcomers Kelly Marie Tran, Benicio Del Toro, and Laura Dern were present just in time for Johnson to spill the tea about what to expect in the newest Star Wars film.

While fans didn’t get to see another trailer or any detailed footage from the film, Johnson did provide the audience with a behind the scenes look at the production of the newest movie. There was a lot to take in here but i’ll try to simplify it by giving you some take-a-ways from the Star Wars Episode VII: The Last Jedi clip.

To capture that otherworldly atmosphere, Rian Johnson took the Star Wars crew to Ireland. The lush, green, Irish coast is the perfect location for Luke Skywalker’s hide out, and Rey’s training ground. And speaking of training, Johnson shows us that Daisy Ridley is hard at work with Wu-Shu sword training to make her lightsaber fight scenes look as believable as possible.

In keeping with tradition, Johnson seems to be utilizing a balanced mix of practical and digital special effects. Make-up artist and graphic artists are shown to be working double-time to bring that space atmosphere to life. In the midst of all of that, we see that Carrie Fisher is all smiles on set. Johnson made sure to capture shots of the actress in and out of character, interacting with the crew, and discussing what it feels like to return to the franchise. Since her death in 2016, anything featuring Fisher is sacrosanct. Many fans are excited to see her in one of her final role as General Leia.

Outside of that, there isn’t much information on how important Benicio Del Toro is to the story, or if Finn in recovery throughout the whole thing, or does he has another lightsaber sword battle up his sleeve, but Rian Johnson has written and directed an installment of the Star Wars franchise that Disney Chairman Alan Horn states, “will take the series to new heights.”

THE LAST JEDI is written and directed by Rian Johnson and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman and executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski.

It’s the second installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy following Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015). The film stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis in returning roles.

New cast members include Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran in unconfirmed roles. It is Fisher’s final film role following her death in December 2016. Johnson has stated that the story resumes immediately after the events of The Force Awakens.

Walt Disney Studios and Lucasfilm will release STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI in theaters on December 15, 2017.
