Disney has an impressive film slate scheduled for 2018. One of the most anticipated movie of 2018 is Ava DuVernay’s Cinematic adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle‘s book A Wrinkle in Time.

Produced by Jim Whitaker and Catherine Hand from a script written by Jennifer Lee (“Frozen”), the story follows Meg Murray (Storm Reid), her brilliant brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe), and their friend Calvin (Levi Miller) on a fantastical journey into alternate dimensions to find her father (Chris Pine) and bring him home.

Last week, EW released first-look photos from A Wrinkle in Time which include photos of Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling), Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), and Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey).” The photos (below) released just in time for D23 where Disney premiered the teaser trailer for the film which looks to be an emotional, YA adventure.

The film stars Oprah Winfrey as Mrs. Which, Reese Witherspoon as Mrs. Whatsit, Mindy Kaling as Mrs. Who, Chris Pine as Mr. Murry, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Mrs. Murry, Zach Galifianakis as The Happy Medium, André Holland as Principal Jenkins, Levi Miller as Calvin, Deric McCabe as Charles Wallace, and introducing Storm Reid as the iconic literary character Meg Murry.

Bellamy Young, Rowan Blanchard and Will McCormack round out the highly acclaimed cast.

DuVernay was very particular about keeping the cast diverse.

“I wanted to put together a cast that represents you and me.” She said firmly. It sounds like Disney let her have creative control over the project.

This was her reason for casting young actress Storm Reid, who acknowledged that acting alongside such great talent is no small feat.

“This cast is absolutely amazing,” she said. “I learned a lot from everyone, and I am really happy that Ava is so patient, and allowed me to have input into the development of Meg Murray.”

The cast reiterated they joined the project, mainly to have the opportunity to work with DuVernay. Disney veteran Chris Pine has a particularly interesting story on how he became involved with the project.

“Well, I actually met Ava by my house where we talked about the film, and I was immediately sold on her vision so I had to say yes.”

The crowd erupted when Oprah took the stage to announce everyone would be getting a newly release poster for the movie. She shouts (in (Oprah’s signature way) “You get a poster!” “You get a poster!” “Everyone gets a poster!” It’s probably a bit intimidating trying to conduct yourself while Oprah is on stage, but she expressed wanting to work with DuVernay again and couldn’t pass up this opportunity.

A Wrinkle in Time looks to be a trippy, science-fiction adventure filled with stunning cinematography, a strong cast, and a young star in Storm Reid to take this film to new heights. Ava DuVernay is set to break a major milestone with the film by becoming the first woman of color to direct blockbuster movie with a budget of at least $100 million. So it’s clear Disney has faith in Her skills as a director, and believes in the power of this project.

The film hits theaters on April 6, 2018.
