Coming out this week from Fox Searchlight Pictures is writer/director Geremy Jasper’s film debut film Patti Cake$, starring Danielle Macdonald, Bridget Everett, Cathy Moriarty, Siddharth Dhananjay, Mamoudou Athie, McCaul Lombardi, Sahr Ngaujah, Wass Stevens, and MC Lyte.

Patti Cake$ introduces Australian native Danielle Macdonald in a breakout role, as aspiring rapper Patricia Dombrowski, a.k.a. Killa P, a.k.a. Patti Cake$. Fighting an unlikely quest for glory in her downtrodden hometown in Jersey where her life is falling apart, Patti tries to reach the big time in the hip hop scene with original and affecting music. Cheered on by her grandmother (Cathy Moriarty) and only friends, Jheri (Siddharth Dhananjay) and Basterd (Mamoudou Athie), Patti also shoulders her mother’s (Bridget Everett) heartaches and misfortunes.

For Mamoudou Athie, who played a young Grandmaster Flash on Netflix’s The Get Down, the Yale School of Drama grad has getting a string of good roles lately. Last year, he co-starred in Stella Meghie‘s (Everything Everything) debut film Jean of the Jones and earlier this year was seen opposite Emma Watson and Tom Hanks in The Circle. Upcoming projects include the action-thriller Underwater starring Kristen Stewart, and Brie Larson’s directorial debut film Unicorn Store with Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Joan Cusack and Bradley Whitford.

Blackfilm.com recently sat down with Athie as he talked about his latest film Patti Cake$.

Patti Cake$ will hit theaters on August 18, 2017.
