Deadline is reporting that Michael Michele, best known for her role as Dr. Cleo Finch on the NBC medical drama ER, has joined the cast of Fox and Lee Daniels‘ musical drama Star as a series regular for Season 2.

The story of three girls’ rise to fame, STAR’s first season ended on the heels of a victory, as the singing trio caught its first big break – winning Atlanta NextFest. Heading into Season Two, one thing is clear: their lives will never be the same. It’s a whole new world for the girls, as STAR (Jude Demorest), ALEXANDRA (Ryan Destiny) and SIMONE (Brittany O’Grady) prepare for their next career move, with help and guidance from CARLOTTA (Queen Latifah), the group’s new manager.

Having entered into a deal with Midtown Sound, the girls and Carlotta must contend with upheavals at their new label. Meanwhile, after a harrowing stint in prison, COTTON (Amiyah Scott) must find a way to re-enter society as a convicted felon. And, with DEREK (Quincy Brown) facing the possibility of never walking again, Alexandra must work to keep their romance alive, while balancing her own career goals. Finally, the fate of JAHIL (Benjamin Bratt) remains decidedly unclear, following last season’s shocking and explosive finale.

Michele will play Ayanna, described as a modern day black Alexis Carrington. She’s the new president of the girls’ record label, and money is the bottom line for her. She knows the music business is changing and is driven to do whatever it takes to make her label relevant.

Michele is the latest addition to the series. Most recently it was announced that Luke James, Evan Ross and Mike Epps were also added to the show in recurring roles. Ross will play Angel, nephew to Jahil Rivera (Benjamin Bratt) and a DJ with a bad-boy streak who is heavy in the Latin music scene. Mike Epps will appear in the Star/Empire crossover episode as Jay Holland, the girls’ record label president who is willing to cross the line with one of them. Luke James, who was mentioned during TCA as a cast addition for the new season, will play Noah Brooks, a top-selling R&B artist at the label. He is charming and a sweet talker with ambitious streak.

The show also has a new showrunner in EP Karin Gist, who said viewers can look forward to the characters “battling to stay together and using their ‘Wonder Woman’ bracelets to battle a love triangle with this awesome new character played by Luke James.”

Michele is also remembered for her role in Mario Van Peebles’ film New Jack City as Nino Brown’s girlfriend, Selina. Her other TV credits include Dangerous Curves, Central Park West, Homicide: Life on the Streets, and Kevin Hill. She will next be seen on OWN’s Queen Sugar as the mother to Darla (played by Bianca Lawson).

STAR is a production of 20th Century Fox Television in association with Lee Daniels Entertainment. Lee Daniels and Tom Donaghy are the creators and executive producers of the series. Pamela Oas Williams also serves as executive producer. Karin Gist serves as showrunner and executive producer on the series.

Season 2 will premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017 at 9pm after Empire, which now moves to 8pm.
