Anthony Mackie and Kian Lawley are the latest to join the cast of The Hate U Give, the Fox 2000 project that George Tillman Jr. will direct.

With production starting today, the duo joins Amandla Sternberg, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, Common, Sabrina Carpenter and Issa Rae.

An adaptation of Angela Thomas’ debut YA novel, which was inspired by Black Lives Matter, the story follows a 16-year-old girl named Starr (Amandla Sternberg) who grew up in a poverty-stricken slum, but now attends a suburban prep school. After she witnesses a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend, she’s torn between her two very different worlds as she tries to speak her truth

Regina Hall will play the mother to Amandla Stenberg’s character (Starr) with Russell Hornsby as Starr’s father. Lamar Johnson will play Seven, Starr’s older brother. Detroit’s Algee Smith will play Starr’s childhood friend, Khalil. Common will play Starr’s uncle who is a police officer. Rae plays April, the activist that helps Stenberg’s character find her voice and speak up.

Mackie will portray local drug dealer, King, while Lawley will portray the boyfriend of Amandla Stenberg’s Starr.

The book was published Feb. 28 by Balzer + Bray and spent more than 13 weeks as No. 1 on the New York Times young adult best-seller list.

Rae and Larry Wilmore created HBO’s “Insecure,” which follows the friendship of two black women as they deal with their own real-life flaws and a seemingly endless series of uncomfortable everyday experiences. Rae, Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, and Lisa Joyce star in the show, which returned for its eight-episode second season on July 23 and was renewed for a third season on Aug. 8.

Rae also executive produces “Insecure” along with showrunner Prentice Penny, Melina Matsoukas, Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky, and Jonathan Berry. She is represented by UTA and 3 Arts.
