Variety is reporting that Selwyn Seyfu Hinds will write and co-executive produce the adaptation of author Nnedi Okorafor’s “Who Fears Death” for a series on HBO, with “Game of Thrones” creator George R.R. Martin serving as executive producer.
Joining Martin as executive producers are former HBO programming president Michael Lombardo and Angela Mancuso.
Who Fears Death tells the coming-of-age tale of Onyesowu in postapocalyptic North Africa, where her story makes her an outcast. She must go on a journey from self-reproach to love, but to do so she’ll have to overcome untold obstacles — defeating her hated sorcerer father and becoming the instrument of prophetic deliverance for a land of oppressed people, all the while fighting to master the terrifying powers growing inside her.
Author Nnedi Okorafor announced in July via Twitter that her novel “Who Fears Death” was in development at HBO. “My novel WHO FEARS DEATH has been optioned by @HBO & is now in early development as a TV series with George RR Martin as executive producer,” she wrote.
HBO in July optioned the book that was first published in 2010 by Penguin Books imprint DAW. The novel won the 2011 World Fantasy Award for best novel as well as the Carl Brandon Kindred Award in 2010 for “outstanding work of speculative fiction dealing with race and ethnicity.”
“Who Fears Death” is a coming of age story about a young woman living in a post-apocalyptic version of North Africa. Okorafor is set to serve as a consultant on the series.
Hinds is repped by Paradigm and Gotham Group.
