Tonight’s episode of the FX limited series American Horror Story: Cult (“Drink the Kool-Aid”) was directed by Angela Bassett. It’s her fourth time behind the camera, and second time for the series. She previously directed “Chapter 6” during the sixth installment of the series, “Roanoke.”

In the promo for “American Horror Story: Cult” episode 9, Kai (Evan Peters) is seen talking to his followers, asking them what would they do if he asked them to make the ultimate sacrifice for him. One member of the group replies by telling the leader that he would do whatever he was told and with a smile on his face. Kai is later seen stirring a liquid in a large pot and pouring the contents into small cups.

The title of this episode is a reference to the expression “drinking the Kool-Aid”, which comes from the 1978 mass murder-suicide of 918 members of the Peoples Temple, a cult led by Jim Jones. Jones subsequently committed the mass murder-suicide by giving his followers cyanide in a Kool-Aid mix.

“Drink the Kool-Aid” is the upcoming ninth episode of Cult, which is schedule to air 11 episodes in total.

Returning stars include Sarah Paulson (as Ally Mayfair-Richards), Frances Conroy, Mare Winningham, Evan Peters (as Kai/Manson/Jones/Koresh/Warhol), Cheyenne Jackson (as Dr. Rudy Vincent), Emma Roberts (as Serina Belinda), Adina Porter (as Beverly Hope), and Chaz Bono.

The newcomers include Lena Dunham (as Valerie Solanas), Billy Eichner (as Harrison Wilton), Billie Lourd (as Winter Anderson), Alison Pill (as Ivy Mayfair-Richards), Colton Haynes (as Detective Samuels), and Leslie Grossman (as Meadow Wilton).

Tonight’s episode also includes Tisha French, Kaiwi Lyman-Mersereau, Noelle Messier, and Jess Allen.

In 2016, Bassett received her first DGA nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies for Television and Mini-Series for her directorial debut “Whitney,” Lifetime’s Whitney Houston film which starred Yaya DaCosta.
