Writer-director Matthew A. Cherry’s 9 Rides, which premiered at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival and was shot on the iPhone 6s, is now available for rent or purchase on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Youtube Movies, VOD and other digital movie outlets.
Featuring Dorian Missick, Omar Dorsey, Robinne Lee, Xosha Roquemore, Amin Joseph, Skye P. Marshall, Thomas Q. Jones, Tracie Thoms, Aasha Davis, and Sujata Day, the film follows an Uber driver (Missick) who gets word that his fiancé might be cheating on him on New Years Eve and proceeds to give nine different groups of people rides and they influence his decision on how he handles the situation.
This is the first feature film shot exclusively with the new iPhone 6s. “Most of the film takes place in a car, so we decided early on that shooting it on iPhones would give us the most freedom,” stated cinematographer Richard Vialet.
At the time of production, Cherry had stated that “The film was shot without a conventional script so it was important to work with actors who were comfortable with being asked to improv, and they all delivered.”
“Nine Rides” was produced by Jerome Caldwell of JCaldwell Productions, Matthew Keene Smith of Twice Told Films, and Datari Turner from Datari Turner Productions. Earlier this year, Gravitas had picked up the U.S. and Canadian distribution rights, while Flourishing had international rights.
Cherry’s previous film was “The Last Fall” with Lance Gross and Nicole Beharie. His next feature will be the animated short, Hair Love.
