Comicbook.com is reporting that This Is Us actress Faithe Herman is joining the cast of DC’s Shazam!.
Created in 1939 by artist C. C. Beck and writer Bill Parker, Shazam first appeared in Fawcett Comics’ Whiz Comics #2. Shazam is the alter ego of a boy named Billy Batson who can transform into an adult superhero by uttering the magic word “Shazam!” The name is an acronym of the ancient world gods and historical figures Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury, from which Batson derives his heroic attributes when in adult form.
The Warner Bros. film will directed by David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation) from a screenplay written by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke. Zachary Levi (Chuck) star as the titular hero and Mark Strong (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Sherlock Holmes) in talks to play villain, Doctor Sivana.
Herman joins a cast of young actors in the film, including Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jack Grazer (IT) as Freddy Freeman, and Grace Fulton possibly playing Mary Marvel.
The site states that Herman could possibly be playing a character from the comic book series, particularly the “New 52” reboot of the early 2010s. She resembles Darla Dudley, the young African American girl who is Billy’s friend at the group home. When Billy/Shazam needs help defeating his nemesis Black Adam, Darla is one of the kids who receives a power up into one of the Shazam Family heroes. They were referred to as “The Marvel Family” in DC Comics lore.
Herman currently stars as Annie Pearson, Randall and Beth’s youngest daughter, in NBC’s drama series This Is Us.
Shazam! hits theaters on April 5th, 2019
