Shonda Rhimes, Jada Pinkett Smith, Gabrielle Union-Wade, Dwyane Wade, Nnamdi Asomugha, and Steve Stoute have added their names to the co-producers team for Broadway’s upcoming American Son starring Kerry Washington and Steven Pasquale in a story tackling, among other subjects, race and law enforcement.
The play is produced by Kerry Washington’s Simpson Street, Jeffrey Richards, Rebecca Gold and Will Trice.
Directed by Kenny Leon, who won a Tony for his direction of A Raisin in the Sun in 2014, the play also stars Jeremy Jordan and Eugene Lee.
Playwright Christopher Demos-Brown is making his Broadway debut with this show. American Son explores tensions of race and class in America as an estranged interracial couple spends the evening in a police station after their teenage son’s car has been found without him in it. The play received its world premiere at Barrington Stage Company in 2016.
Washington will play Kendra Ellis-Connor, with Pasquale as Scott Connor, and Eugene Lee (Gem of the Ocean) as Lieutenant John Stokes.
AMERICAN SON will begin performances on Saturday, October 6, 2018 with an official opening night set for Sunday, November 4, 2018. American Son will play a limited engagement at the Booth Theatre on Broadway (222 West 45th Street).
