Warner Bros. has released a trailer tease to the latest installment in the “Shaft” franchise with Samuel L. Jackson, Jessie T. Usher, Richard Roundtree, Regina Hall and Alexandra Shipp. Look for the full trailer to arrive on Thursday!
Tim Story is directing the movie, which is seen as a continuation of the story of Shaft, the private detective that first appeared in the 1970s Blaxploitation action movie that became a pop culture phenomenon.
JJ, aka John Shaft Jr. (Usher), may be a cyber security expert with a degree from MIT, but to uncover the truth behind his best friend’s untimely death, he needs an education only his dad can provide. Absent throughout JJ’s youth, the legendary locked-and-loaded John Shaft agrees to help his progeny navigate Harlem’s heroin-infested underbelly. And while JJ’s own FBI analyst’s badge may clash with his dad’s trademark leather coat, there’s no denying family. Besides, Shaft’s got an agenda of his own, and a score to settle that’s professional and personal.
Jackson is reprising the role he first played in the 2000 update by John Singleton, Shipp will play Usher’s love interest and female lead of the movie.
Hall will play a former love interest of John Shaft and the younger Shaft’s mother.
Originally a 1970 novel by Ernest Tidyman, Shaft was famously made into a feature film, directed by Gordon Parks, in 1971. Richard Roundtree played the title role, Detective John Shaft, in the original film, immediately reprising the role for two sequels: Shaft’s Big Score in 1972 and Shaft in Africa in 1973. He then starred in a short lived (7 episodes) series for CBS.
Kenya Barris and Alex Barnow wrote the script. Barris is also producing as is John Davis.
Shaft will hit theaters on June 14, 2019
