The second season of Lena Waithe and Halle Berry’s BET comedy series BOOMERANG is set to premiere on Wednesday, March 11th at 10:30pm EST.
For the series return, two women of color take the helm as co-showrunners, Dime Davis (A Black Lady Sketch Show, The Chi, Boomerang S1) and Angeli Millan (The Cleveland Show, Us and Them, The Muppets). The entire season will be directed exclusively by women of color, with Dime Davis returning to the director’s chair for half of the season. The effort for increased leadership behind the lens by women of color is an effort that Hillman Grad Productions, 606 Films, BET, Paramount, and Viacom all supported.

Produced through Lena Waithe’s Hillman Grad Productions and Halle Berry’s 606 Films, in conjunction with Paramount Television,BOOMERANG is a half-hour subversive, smart, serialized comedy, fueled by romance, friendship, gender politics, love and, of course, sex. The story picks up roughly twenty-five years after the 1992 “Boomerang” movie and centers on Simone Graham (daughter of Marcus Graham and Angela Lewis) and Bryson Broyer (son of Jaqueline Broyer), who are marketing professionals trying to step out of their parents’ shadows. The series follows a group of childhood friends who are looking to make their own mark in the world…all while navigating their feelings for each other.

The original cast are back to deal with the ramifications of Simone and Bryson’s breakup and how it effects the group’s friendship. Throughout the season, each of our main characters: Simone (Tetona Jackson), Bryson (Tequan Richmond), Crystal (Brittany Inge), Ari (Leland Martin), Tia (Lala Milan) and David (RJ Walker) look inward to find out who they truly are while discovering that together, they’re growing apart. Guest stars for season two will include Jaleel White, Joey Bada$$, Walter Emmanuel Jones and Kim Wayans.
Blackfilm.com recently caught up with Davis and Millan as they briefly discussed what lies ahead for Season 2.

What are we expecting for season two?
Dime Davis: We wanted to do two things. We wanted to make our show an ensemble show now and wanted to pick up where season one left off. It left off with a breakup between the main two characters, Simone and Bryson. When two people have a core frame break up, everybody breaks up. So what’s happening in this season is we’re feeling the effects of that through all the different characters, and we get to travel with them as they go on their own individual journeys as a result of what’s happening with their friends.

Angeli Millan: I think we also really wanted to take into consideration a lot of what our fans had to say that they felt like they were curious or misunderstood, not knowing about our show from season one, and it was really cool. We really tried to read through a lot from Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms. We really talked about it as a writers room about how we can really explore how these people are affected by each other, basically. We really get into what’s going on under the surface between what they were willing to share with their ensemble of friends and what are the things that are underneath the surface that we didn’t get to see last season?
Dime Davis: It’s Boomerang. It’s not the same as the film but we have a responsibility to the viewers of the film to bring some of that and so we have a bunch of Easter eggs and homages that are really ingrained in your story that are super fun for people who know the film.
