Disney Pixar’s ‘Onward’ To Be Released Online Early & On Disney Plus

Deadline is reporting that Onward, the Disney Pixar animated feature, is being made available online ahead of its planned home entertainment release by the studio due to the coronavirus pandemic’s impact on cinemas.

Disney and Pixar’s “Onward” will be available to buy digitally for $19.99 and on Movies Anywhere beginning on Friday at 5 p.m. PT. It hits Disney Plus on April 3 in the U.S.

“While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes,” said director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae.

The fantasy adventure, starring the voices of Chris Pratt, Tom Holland, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lena Waite and Octavia Spencer, had grossed $62M domestic and $103M global before cinemas around the world shuttered due to the spread of COVID-19. With no confirmed date in place yet for theaters to re-open, and many people stuck at home, more films are heading online.

Earlier this week, Universal opted Blumhouse’s The Invisible Man and The Hunt, and Focus Features’ Emma online early, breaking the theatrical window.

Set in a suburban fantasy world, Disney•Pixar’s Onward introduces two teenage elf brothers who embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still a little magic left out there.
