Last week the list of candidates for the 2020 Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors election was released. The list of candidates is made up of qualified AMPAS members who actually submit themselves.
Deadline reported that the winner in each branch are being chosen directly from these entries rather than whittling it down to four finalists in each, as has been done previously. The winners for the 17 open slots on the 54-member board will be chosen by preferential balloting, just like Best Picture race at the Oscars. Voting begins Monday and ballots are due back June 5.
In the actors branch, incumbent governor Whoopi Goldberg is running for re-election against past governor Ed Begley Jr. vying to return to the board. Among the other actors running opposite in this category is Colman Domingo.
For the directors branch, among those vying for a spot against incumbent Kimberley Peirce include Reginald Hudlin, Ava Duvernay and Kasi Lemmons. Hudlin once served as an Oscar-show producer years ago as well an as at-large board member. Terilyn A Shropshire is a nominee in the editors branch. Interesting enough, Shropshire was the editor to four of Lemmons’ films and Part One of DuVernay’s When They See Us series. Sound editor Bobbi Banks is a nominee in her respective branch and Oscar winner John Ridley is a nominee in the writers branch. Incumbent Wynn P Thomas of the production design category is running again.
