The entertainment community mourns the passing of Comedy Legend Paul Mooney who passed away this morning at the age of 79 from a heart attack.

His passing was announced by cousin, Rudy Ealy, to CNN’s Roland Martin, who said Mooney died at his home in Oakland, CA.

Mooney, who is known for his raw and unfiltered humor, lent his genius as a writer to sitcoms such as Sanford and Son and Good Times but more significantly for comedian Richard Pryor. Mooney served as the head writer for Pryor’s The Richard Pryor Show, co-wrote much of the material on his comedy albums and was recruited by Pryor to provide content for his hosting appearnce on Saturday Night Live. Mooney also served in the position of head writer for the first year of the sketch comedy series In Living Color.
A few of Mooney’s most memorable acting credits included his portrayal of singer Sam Cooke in 1978’s The Buddy Holly Story, Junebug in Spike Lee’s 2000 Bamboozled, guest appearances on such TV series and specials as The Richard Pryor Show and Chappelle’s Show. In 2004, he starred in his own comedy series, Judge Mooney.
The entertainment community has taken to Twitter to express their appreciation for his contributions. Paul Mooney was truly comedic gold and his voice and talent will be missed!
