The “comedic genius and legend,” was celebrated with a hiarious speech by Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane. The duo not only shared amusing anecdotes but also paid tribute by singing a collection of Mel Brooks’ top songs.
Editor Carol Littleton received recognition from Glenn Close for her remarkable legacy of work, including Body Heat, E.T. and The Big Chill.
Regina King took the stage next to honor Angela Bassett, affectionately calling her a “national treasure.” Regina spoke on Angela’s exceptional career starring in over 100 roles and illuminated the impact Angela has had on her and other actresses. Bassett, delivered a speech that resonated deeply with the audience. Her powerful words shifted the energy in the room, especially when she addressed her “fellow black actresses,” urging them never to let fear, frustration, or disappointment hinder the blessings that are divinely theirs. Bassett’s speech was a beacon of inspiration for many, affirming her as a guiding light in the industry.
The prestigious Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award was bestowed upon Michelle Satter, the Founding Senior Director of Artist Programs at the Sundance Institute. Ryan Coogler, who presented the award, emotionally recounted his and Chloé Zhao‘s transformative experiences under Michelle’s guidance at the Sundance Labs. Coogler expressed deep emotion when discussing his relationship with Michelle’s son, Michael Latt, whose life was tragically cut short by an act of violence in November 2023. Chloé Zhao, in her heartfelt words, declared “Michelle you are a mother to, you are a mother to Ryan, and all the artists in the room who have been nurtured and supported by you”.
