Oscar-nominated Beasts Of The Southern Wild star Quvenzhané Wallis has been set to star in the film adaptation of Holly Goldberg Sloan’s bestselling novel Counting By 7s, reports Deadline. Shadow and Act first mentioned the story back in May.
The bestseller centers on Willow Chance, a twelve-year old girl who has been identified at an early age as ‘gifted’. Willow lives in Bakersfield, California and comes home from school one day to the news that her parents have been killed in a traffic accident.
What follows is Willow’s search to find a place where she belongs.
In equal parts an exploration of the pain of loss and of the triumph of moving forward, the novel looks at how one person can change the lives of many, often without even trying.
In speaking with the site’s Mike Fleming, Wallis states, “I am honored to play the role of Willow in Counting by 7s. I love the message behind the story. I am excited to be a part of it and to see it come to life.”
Counting by 7s is being produced by Mazur/Kaplan’s Paula Mazur and Mitchell Kaplan, and Leslie Urdang and Dean Vanech’s Olympus Pictures (Beginners, Thanks For Sharing).
Wallis, who appeared briefly in the Oscar winning film ’12 Years a Slave,’ will later be seen in the musical Annie, and also will star in the upcoming adaptation of Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet, and Fathers And Daughters alongside Russell Crowe.
