The Hollywood Reporter is stating that Jessie Usher, the lead of Starz’s series Survivor’s Remorse, has been cast in Fox’s hot sequel Independence Day 2.
With Director Roland Emmerich returning to helm the film and Dean Devlin, Emmerich and Harald Kloser back as producers, Independence Day 2 is set for release on June 24, 2016.
Will Smith, who became an international star with the success of the original 1996 film, is not expected to reprise his role, so Usher will play the son of Smith’s character, Captain Steven Hiller, a confident U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18 pilot who helped bring down the aliens after they invaded Earth.
Emmerich has stated that original cast members Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman will return in the sequel.
Usher currently stars in the Lebron James-produced Starz series Survivor’s Remorse as Cam Calloway, a basketball player who moves with his family to Atlanta after he signs a pro contract. The first season premiered in October 2014, and the network quickly renewed the show for a second season, which will air later this year.
He appeared in last year’s TriStar football drama When the Game Stands Tall.
