According to THR, Idris Elba is replacing Jamie Foxx to star in writer-director Harmony Korine‘s latest film, The Trap.
The site also states that Al Pacino, James Franco, and Robert Pattinson also in final talks to join Elba and Benicio Del Toro in the cast
The crime thriller will follow two very different childhood friends. One is very successful and the other has spent most of his life a convict. On the eve of a big recognition for the later, the other is released from jail and determined to get even.
Elba will play a gangster rap artist named Rico who is at the top of his career when Slim (Del Toro), his best friend who took the fall for him for a robbery, is released from prison after 14 years. Now on the outside, Slim is determined to exact revenge on his adversary, who not only achieved fame and fortune but also married Slim’s ex-girlfriend and has raised Slim’s son as his own.
Slim’s plot includes recruiting a crew of Uzi-weilding surfers led by Max (Pattinson), as well as enlisting the help of Rico’s cocaine-happy manager (Franco). Pacino will play Slim’s parole officer.
John Lesher and Charles-Marie Anthonioz are producing the film, which is slated to shoot later this year.
Korine, who directed last year’s Spring Breakers, is known for his oddball indie films such as Julien Donkey-Boy, Gummo and Trash Humpers.
Elba can currently be seen in “The Gunman” opposite Sean Penn. He will next be seen next in theaters with “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (May 1), followed by a starring role in the African war drama “Beasts of No Nation,” which was recently acquired by Netflix and is slated to debut on the streaming service and in select theaters this fall.
