Gugu Mbatha-Raw has joined the cast of Walt Disney Pictures’ upcoming live action take on Beauty and the Beast, playing the role of Plumette, the animated film’s feather duster.
Emma Watson and Dan Stevens will star as Belle and the Beast/Prince, respectively, and Luke Evans will play the role of Gaston. Emma Thompson has been cast as Mrs. Potts, Kevin Kline as Belle’s father, Maurice and Ian McKellen as Cogsworth.
In Disney’s 1991 animated film, the feather duster is Lumière’s love interest.
Set to hit theaters on March 17, 2017, Bill Condon will direct from a script by Stephen Chbosky. The film will be produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman.
Composer Alan Menken, who won two Academy Awards for the 1991 animated classic, will score the film, which will feature new recordings of the original songs in addition to several new songs written by Menken and Sir Tim Rice.
Mbatha-Raw was last seen in Jupiter Ascending, opposite recent Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne. In 2014, she was the lead actress in Amma Asante’s Belle and Gina Prince-Bythewood’s Beyond The Lights.
Production begins in May at Shepperton Studios in London.
