Screenwriter Gregory Allen Howard has been hired the adapt the screenplay for the Misty Copeland biopic that New Line will distribute. The film company acquired the rights to her biography, Life In Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina.

Copeland made history by becoming the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre. The bestselling book, and the movie, will chronicle humble beginnings and effort to reach that pinnacle.

Offspring Entertainment’s Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot will produce with Philip Sandhaus.

Misty Copeland Life In Motion

Howard wrote the original screenplay for Disney’s “Remember The Titans,” which starred Denzel Washington and grossed over $117 million dollars. Titans also had the distinction to be the first African-American scripted drama ever to gross over 100 million dollars. The Virginia native also wrote the story of “Ali” that was made into a film which Will Smith starred in and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

He recently wrote the script for a Harriet Tubman feature that will begin production in January production with Seith Mann attached to direct for New Balloon/MACRO
