Aisha Hinds, who recently played Fannie Lou Hamer in HBO’s Emmy-nominated “All The Way,” and will be in Fox’s event series “Shots Fired,” has been cast to play Harriet Tubman for Season 2 of WGN America’s critically acclaimed series, “Underground,” reports Variety.
The second season of “Underground,” which will span 10 episodes, will follow an unremitting struggle for freedom within a divided America on the brink of civil war, each side vying to enact their own justice. The character of Harriet Tubman appeared in the final episode to Season 1.
Per Wikipedia, Tubman was an American abolitionist, humanitarian, and an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped and subsequently made some thirteen missions to rescue approximately seventy enslaved families and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. She later helped abolitionist John Brown recruit men for his raid on Harpers Ferry, and in the post-war era was an active participant in the struggle for women’s suffrage.
Variety also stated that aside from Hinds, new additions to the cast for the upcoming season are Jasika Nicole (“Fringe,” “Scandal”) who will play Georgia, an abolitionist with a covert station along the Underground whose quiet confidence hides secrets of her own; Michael Trotter (“Rosewood”) who will play Biographer, an astute observer of people who lives through the lives of others often fearful of taking chances; and Jesse Luken (“Justified,” 42) who will play Smoke, the fearless second in command of Patty Cannon’s infamous gang of slave catchers.
Coming back from Season 1 are Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Aldis Hodge, Christopher Meloni, Alano Miller, Jessica de Gouw and Amirah Vann. Marc Blucas will return in a guest role, as John Hawkes.
Created by Misha Green and Joe Pokaski, the show is executive produced by John Legend, Akiva Goldsman, Tory Tunnell, Joby Harold, Mike Jackson, Ty Stiklorius and Anthony Hemingway. Sony Pictures Television is the studio.
Season 2 of “Underground” heads into production next week in Savannah, Georgia, and is slated to premiere in early 2017.
