Today marks the 25th Anniversary of the release date (March 27) for the sports comedy ‘White Men Can’t Jump,’ which starred Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson, Rosie Perez and Tyra Farrell.
Written and directed by Ron Shelton, the film centered on Sidney Deane (Wesley Snipes) and Billy Hoyle (Woody Harrelson), two men who team up to hustle other Los Angeles street basketball players. Despite the alliance, the two continually bicker—with each other and their significant others.
White Men Can’t Jump grossed $14M during its opening weekend and went on to gross a total $76M domestically and $90M worldwide. Surprisingly, it’s US take made it the 16th highest-grossing movie of 1992.
Very recently, it was announced that producer-screenwriter Kenya Barris (Black-ish, Barbershop: The Next Cut) will be developing a remake with NBA star Blake Griffin and NFL player Ryan Kalil producing the film.
While promoting his latest film ‘Wilson,’ Blackfilm.com asked Harrelson about his thoughts on the remake
Woody Harrelson: I think it’s great that they are doing are a remake. I think it’s really cool. I wish them luck. I find it great that they want to do it. I’m going to go see it.
