Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who will next be seen in George Tillman Jr.‘s The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete, has joined the cast of Annie, a remake of the classic Broadway musical with a modern spin, joining Quvenzhane Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale.
Akinnuoye-Agbaje will take on the role of ‘Nash,’ described as “the tough but lovable bodyguard and driver for Stacks (Foxx) and a good friend of Annie.”
Akinnuoye-Agbaje will begin filming his scenes on-location in New York City tomorrow.
Will Gluck is directing the forthcoming major motion picture remake of the beloved Charles Strouse/Thomas Meehan/Martin Charnin stage musical classic ANNIE from a revised script by Emma Thompson and Aline Brosh McKenna. Gluck is producing with James Lassiter, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Shawn Carter aka Jay Z, Jay Brown and Tyran Smith.
The Tony Award-winning stage musical Annie has previously been filmed twice, the first time in 1982 with John Huston in the director’s chair and later in a made-for-TV adaptation produced by Disney and helmed by CHICAGO director Rob Marshall in 1999. Annie is currently playing on Broadway in a James Lapine-directed revival starring Lilla Crawford and Anthony Warlow.
Akinnuoye-Agbaje will also appear in THOR: THE DARK WORLD, Paul W.S. Anderson’s POMPEII, and has previously been seen in G.I. JOE: THE ROSE OF COBRA, BULLET TO THE HEAD, J.J. Abrams’ LOST and more.
