Walt Disney Pictures has hired director Ava DuVernay to direct “A Wrinkle In Time,” an adaptation of the 1963 Newbery Medal-winning Madeleine L’Engle fantasy classic novel adapted by Oscar-winning Frozen writer and co-director Jennifer Lee.

A Wrinkle In Time involves a young girl whose government scientist father has gone missing after working on a mysterious project called a tesseract, which involves being transported to a fifth dimension with mysterious inhabited planets. She takes part in a search for her father and sees some incredible creatures along the way.

Variety reported in 2014 that Lee had been attached to “Wrinkle in Time,” which was one of Lee’s favorite novels as a child. She impressed Disney executives with her take on the project, which emphasizes a strong female-driven narrative and creatively approaches the science fiction and world-building elements of the book.

“A Wrinkle in Time” is the first book in L’Engle’s “Time Quartet” series that also includes “A Wind in the Door,” “Many Waters,” and “A Swiftly Tilting Planet.”

DuVernay previously helmed the critically acclaimed Martin Luther King “Selma,” and “Middle of Nowhere,” which won her the Grand Jury Prize and Best Dramatic Director awards at Sundance 2012, and the John Cassavetes Award at the Independent Spirits Awards. DuVernay is repped by CAA and attorney Gordon Bobb at Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka Finkelstein & Lezcano.

Steven Spielberg’s Ambling Partners has also been eyeing DuVernay as a candidate to direct science-fiction thriller “Intelligent Life” with Lupita Nyong’o in talks to star. “
