Blackfilm Movie Night…An Evening of Short Films

The onslaught of COVID-19 has hit us all pretty hard. Locked down and shut-in, never before have we had so much time on our hands that we just didn’t know what to do with ourselves. Most of us are can find the silver lining in being able to spend more time enjoying loved ones. However, on the other hand; sometimes the anxiety of not knowing what the future holds, or how and when we will be able to live freely again can bring on feelings of uncertainty and undue stress.

To help relieve some of those feelings, for your viewing pleasure, BlackFilm.com has partnered with Black Film Space to host Black Film Cares, a virtual short film festival that will be streamed live on Facebook Watch. This virtual event will take place on May 20th, from 6 pm – 12 midnight, and is designed to help you escape the trials of the day with a spectrum of diverse stories composed in a series of short films curated specifically for audiences of color.

In addition to providing entertainment for those shut-in and sheltering in place, the Blackfilm Movie Night virtual event will also serve as a way to give back to the Black creatives who have poured so much of their hearts and souls into the work that they give to the world. Throughout the event, viewers will have the opportunity to donate to a fund that will be used to distribute grants of up to $1000 to up and coming filmmakers.

From this year’s Oscar winner for Animated Short Film, Matthew Cherry’s, “Hair Love” to the thought-provoking movie “Black Card,” written and directed by Pete Chatmon, (Director credits include episodes of HBO’s, “Insecure”, ABC’s; “Grey’s Anatomy and “Black-ish”, TBS’s; The Last OG”, and OWN’s “Greenleaf”), the themes for the Black Film Care’s line-up of 15 short films span the gamut, has something for everyone represents a broad spectrum of black life and culture.

In addition, as a special treat for the viewing audience and especially the black film enthusiast, many of the film’s writers and directions will join us live to introduce their films before they air as well as hang around for a couple of questions after. Also, as we are always mindful of the importance of business aspects of the film industry for creators of colors, we have rounded out the event to include a couple of segments featuring very brief interviews with industry executives who work behind the scenes to help pull these productions together.

All-in-all the films selected for this series are sure to invoke a range of emotions that will make you think, laugh, cry, and shout! It is our hope that by the end you will have had a memorable evening that will stand out as one of the enjoyable moments during the COVID-19 Crisis.
