Among the films selected to play the 2017 African Diaspora International Film Festival (Nov. 24 to Dec. 10) is the indie film The Magnificent Life of Charlie aka Charlie.
The African Diaspora International Film Festival (ADIFF) celebrates its 25th anniversary with a total of 64 films from 31 countries including 31 World, US and NY Premieres. Screenings will be held in three venues in Manhattan: Teachers College, Columbia University, Cinema Village and MIST Harlem.
Directed by Bobby Huntley from a script written by Huntley and Nikki Wade, the film stars Nikki Lashae, Kortnee Price, Ashley S. Evans, & Lailaa Brookings.
Also featured in the film are Kai Turé, Priah Nicole Ferguson, Nicole Douglas & Mary Ann La Cue.
After her sister Brandy’s untimely death, everyone is taken aback by Charlie’s unorthodox (and seemingly chipper) approach to her grieving process. Follow Charlie and her friends Kayla and Keturah as they go along for a wild, hilariously exhilarating and bittersweet ride – which will surely be the craziest day of Charlie’s life.
Charlie was filmed over seven jam-packed weekends in Atlanta, GA, with very little to no budget. The talented cast and crew joined together to create this visually vibrant story for the screen. The look, tone and style of the production were heavily influenced by French cinema and the early films of Spike Lee, Madonna, and Prince. The result is an interesting world where the aesthetics of throwback 1980’s gritty New York has been combined with present day Atlanta flair and flourishes of whimsy in this heartwarming tale of love between sisters.
“Charlie” is executive produced by Chet A. Brewster of Davenstar 1 Entertainment; Nikki Wade produces via Divadom Entertainment; Cinematgraphy is by Kisha Hughes; Colorist is Brandon Cordy; and Musical Score is by Chuckey Charlies.
