The Hollywood Reporter is stating that Chiwetel Ejiofor is in talks to join the cast of ‘Mary Magdalene’ as Peter the Apostle.

Garth Davis is directing the film from a script written by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett. Rooney Mara will star as Magdalene with Joaquin Phoenix playing Jesus Christ.

According to the site, the film is being described as an “authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history.”

Mary Magdalene, according to the Bible, traveled with Jesus as one of his followers. She is said to have witnessed Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

Peter was one of Jesus’ twelve apostles, who, upon Jesus’ arrest and later crucifixion, infamously denied him three times. He was later forgiven and acted as a leader in the early Christian Church and is recognized as the first Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.

Ejiofor will next be seen opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel’s Doctor Strange. He was last seen in Triple 9 with Woody Harrelson and Gal Gadot.
