Netflix has released first look photos for Spiderhead, a genre-bending and darkly funny psychological thriller starring Chris Hemsworth, Miles Teller, and Jurnee Smollett. Premiering globally on June 17, 2022.
In a state-of-the-art penitentiary run by brilliant visionary Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth), inmates wear a surgically attached device that administers dosages of mind-altering drugs in exchange for commuted sentences. There are no bars, no cells, or orange jumpsuits. In Spiderhead, incarcerated volunteers are free to be themselves. Until they’re not. At times, they’re a better version. Need to lighten up? There’s a drug for that. At a loss for words? There’s a drug for that, too. But when two subjects, Jeff (Miles Teller) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett), form a connection, their path to redemption take a twistier turn, as Abnesti’s experiments start to push the limits of free will altogether.
Spiderhead is directed by Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy, Top Gun: Maverick) and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool, Zombieland). The film is based on The New Yorker short story Escape from Spiderhead by George Saunders, which was first published in 2010.

The original short story Escape from Spiderhead contains didactic themes which are common in the work of author George Saunders, including the role of work and despair in society. The story, which is set in a dystopian future, includes a number of complex and intense themes including depression and suicide.
Locations for filming included the Gold Coast, Darlington, as well as popular tourist destination the Whitsundays. Producer Tommy Harper commented on the locations, “The great thing about this area is you can be on the beach, you can do waterwork, you can be in the desert, you could be in the country and feel like you’re in Texas you can be in a rainforest and feel like you’re in Hawaii.” Screen Queensland named Hinze Dam and Tallebudgera Valley as places the production shot on location.
