New York Theatre Workshop has confirmed that David Oyelowo and Daniel Craig will both star in an upcoming off-Broadway production of the Shakespeare tragedy “Othello.” Scheduled for Fall 2016, Oyelowo will play the title character and Craig as the villainous Iago.
Tony-winning Fun Home director Sam Gold will direct the project, with further casting and details to be announced at a later date.
“This production is an opportunity for New York Theatre Workshop to do what it aspires to do – to foster the growth and accomplishment of the artists we believe in,” said artistic director James C. Nicola. “When Sam Gold, a longstanding member of our NYTW Usual Suspects community, came to us with the beginning sketches of this production, with these two sublime actors, it seemed the perfect next step for us to take together. I’m eager to see what these original, creative artists come up with in response to Shakespeare’s enduring tragedy.”
Oyelowo is currently filming Amma Asante’s “A United Kingdom” opposite Rosamund Pike, while Craig will be seen next month in the 24th installment of the James Bond franchise, Spectre.
Tickets to Othello are available with a 2016-17 package, on sale via NYTW.org or by calling (212) 460-5475.
