While promoting her upcoming film, Gareth Edwards’s Godzilla, actress Elizabeth Olsen talked briefly about her next project, playing Scarlet Witch opposite her Godzilla co-star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who will be playing Quicksilver in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron.’
Coincidentally, the characters first appeared on-screen in the post-credits to ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘ in which Scarlet is seen juggling some objects which Quicksilver is bouncing off the walls. Both are being held in a glass cage by the Baron Wolfgang von Strucker (played by Thomas Kretschmann).
What is your character doing with those blocks at the end of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier?’
Elizabeth Olsen: What am I doing? Whatever it looks like. I don’t know if I’m allowed to say anything. I’m so terrified about everything Marvel.
What’s it like playing the wife to Aaron in this film (Godzilla) and then transition to being his sister in another?
Elizabeth Olsen: It’s awesome! You know, we only did a few scenes together for this film (Godzila), but we spent time together in Vancouver, and I got to know his family, and we spent time together. And to play really tight twin brother and sister, it’s really lucky that it’s not with some guy I jut met or something. I think we both like the fact that we have this other film (Godzilla) in our repertoire.
What’s your process with these franchise films? Did you go back and watch previous Godzilla films and with Avengers, did you read the comic books?
Elizabeth Olsen: With Gozilla, not so much. Even Gareth would say that if I wanted to see a Gozilla film, see the 1954 original. In his mind, there’s no reason to see anything else. In preparing for Godzilla, it was largely making sure the family wasn’t stereotyped but broad enough because it needs to reach a world audience. But rooted and grounded enough in a relationship that you can get behind. That was a conversation that never stopped between Gareth, Aaron and I. With ‘Avengers’, for me it was just like ‘Throw it all in!’ and I just like read. And I’m still reading comics, and I love looking at fan pages for something like that. I think for something like a comic book character, that’s something else. But I’m also the first human interpretation of the Scarlet Witch, so you want to be able to honor cartoons and comics and fans and all of that. But bring your own thing to it that you’re re-creating. So that’s been a really fun process.
Fun reading…
Elizabeth Olsen: But it’s awesome because she’s dope.
Was Godzilla your first film doing CGI and were you a pro by the time you started shooting Avengers?
Elizabeth Olsen: It was definitely my first time doing something like this. I didn’t have any green screens to work with. It was all imagination. It such a different world. It’s so crazy. The main difference is that in ‘Godzilla’ you’re reacting to something that isn’t there, and in something like ‘Avengers’, you’re approaching and almost interacting with something that’s not there. And so that’s what the main difference is for me, right now.
