Blackfilm, com has exclusively learned that Malik Yoba, Robert Ri’chard, Wesley Jonathan, Robert Riley and Rick Gonzalez will star in ‘Deadbeat Dad Rehab,’ which will be directed by Carl Seaton.
The film is based on the 2015 ABFF screenplay competition winner of the same title by Keronoda “Kiki” McKnight.
Four men in denial of their poor parenting skills attend a rehab for deadbeat dads that uses unusual methods to help them become true fathers and real men.
According to cablefax.com, “McKnight’s screenplay takes a different angle on the traditional deadbeat dad story and focuses on the various ways a father can be absent from his child’s life, whether financially, physically or emotionally. The idea came from personal experiences McKnight and friends had dealt with—she even conducted research by asking Facebook friends for their own anecdotes of deadbeat dads. TV One’s SVP, Original Programming and Production D’Angela Proctor said McKnight’s piece was chosen due to its great writing, strong dialogue and subject matter.”
Yoba was last seen playing Vernon Turner on Season 1 of Fox’s hit series Empire. He will next be seen in the sci-fi thriller Paradox opposite Zoë Bell. Ri’chard had a lead role in the male stripper film Chocolate City and will reprise the role in the sequel, Chocolate City: Vegas. Jonathan is currently seen opposite Cedric the Entertainer in the TV Land sitcom, The Soul Man. Riley currently plays Terrence Wall in the VH1 series Hit the Floor and can also be seen on the big screen opposite Lauren London in The Perfect Match. Gonzalez, whose film credits include Coach Carter, Biker Boyz and War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise, was last seen guest starring on the USA network, Mr. Robot.
Currently in production in Atlanta through Bobbcat Films’ Roger Bobb and Angi Bones, ‘Deadbeat Dad Rehab’ will premiere at the 20th ABFF on June 16, followed by on air on TV One in July.
