The LA Film Festival, produced by the arts organization Film Independent, unveiled its competition lineup on Tuesday, announcing 42 world premiere titles to play in the sections of U.S. fiction, documentary, world fiction, nightfall and LA muse. The festival runs from June 1 through 9 at ArcLight Cinemas, headquartered at ArcLight Culver City.
There’s a great deal of diversity spread among the selections. 43% of the films are directed by women and 38% are directed by people of color. “The competition lineup of 42 world premieres echoes Film Independent’s mission to celebrate diversity and showcases a multitude of innovative, fresh voices. We can’t wait to share these films with audiences and industry alike,” the festival’s director, Stephanie Allain, said in a statement.
Opening the festival will be “Lowriders,” produced by Brian Grazer and Film Independent Forum alum Jason Blum, Lowriders stars Eva Longoria, Demián Bichir, Melissa Benoist, and Gabriel Chavarria in a gritty coming-of-age tale set amid East LA’s vibrant and immersive car culture. Chavarria stars as Danny, a talented young street artist caught between the lowrider world embodied by his old-school father (Bichir) and the adrenaline-fueled outlet that gives his creativity a much-needed avenue for self-expression.
“We’re thrilled to open with Lowriders,” said LA Film Festival Director Stephanie Allain. “Made by filmmakers of color, Lowriders embodies our mission.”
Among the films of interest in the U.S. competition section includes “72 Hours,” directed by Raafi Rivero; “Destined,” directed by Qasim Basir; and “Dreamstates,” directed by Anisia Uzeyman; “The House on Coco Road,” directed by Damani Baker; “Jackson,” directed by Maisie Crow; “Olympic Pride, American Prejudice,” directed by Deborah Riley Draper; and “Like Cotton Twines,” directed by Leila Djansi; “London Town”
Film Independent Spirit Award winner and LA Film Festival alum Ryan Coogler (Creed) will be honored as the 2016 Festival’s Guest Director. Coogler’s Fruitvale Station appeared at the festival in 2013 and later won Best First Feature at the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards.
Coogler will attend Film Independent’s Filmmaker Retreat—an annual event which brings each year’s feature category directors together with high-profile mentors and selected Film Independent Board Members for a community-building event prior to the official start of the 2016 Festival.
Selma director Ava DuVernay, along with her innovative distribution shingle Array Releasing, will receive the festival’s annual Spirit of Independence Award, which recognizes members of the independent film community who “advance the cause of independent film and champion creative freedom.”

Short Films (58): From over 2,500 submissions, the short films selected represent 15 countries and 64% are directed by women. Short films are shown before features and as part of seven short film programs. Shorts will compete for juried prizes for fiction and documentary shorts, as well as an Audience Award for Best Short Film.
Future Filmmakers Showcase: High School Shorts (33): The LA Film Festival’s Future Filmmaker Showcase brings to the big screen the best films made by budding young filmmakers from across the country and the globe. In this diverse slate of films, incredibly accomplished high school students will present wild comedies, moving dramas, mesmerizing animation, introspective experimental films and everything in between.
