Searchlight Pictures recently released the poster art for Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s debut award winning film Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised). The special “Blur Series” photos come ahead of the films theatrical and Hulu release of July 2.
The films logline reads: In 1969, during the same summer as Woodstock, a different music festival took place 100 miles away. More than 300,000 people attended the summer concert series known as the Harlem Cultural Festival. It was filmed, but after that summer, the footage sat in a basement for 50 years. It has never been seen. Until now.
Questlove – a musician, songwriter, DJ, and journalist, and the well known drummer from hip-hop group The Roots – debuted Summer of Soul at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival which was received with much praise, earning Summer of Soul the audience award and the grand jury prize in the U.S. documentary competition section at the festival.
The posters depict the different acts that were showcased at the enshrouded Harlem Cultural Festival. The colorfully blurred images depict B.B. King, Abbey Lincoln, Mahalia Jackson, Sly and the Family Stone, Ray Barretto and more who were present at the iconic celebration of black and brown music.
