Jordan Peele “Get Out” led the nominations for the 2017 Gotham Awards, the indie-centric trophies handed out annually by the Independent Filmmaker Project.
The drama, about a young African-American man who visits his white girlfriend’s family estate and becomes ensnared in a more sinister real reason for the invitation, was nominated for a total of four awards. It scored a nod for best feature, and also made the cut for screenplay (by Peele), actor (lead Daniel Kaluuya) and breakthrough director (Peele).
The film will be competing for Best Feature with Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name, Sean Baker’s The Florida Project, Josh and Benny Safdie’s Good Time and Craig Gillespie’s I, Tonya
“Mudbound” which has played at Sundance, Toronto and New York and will open up AFI, also scored nods for breakthrough actor (Mary J. Blige) and a special acting award for the film’s cast, which includes Carey Mulligan, Garrett Hedlund, Jason Clarke, Jason Mitchell, Mary J. Blige, Rob Morgan, and Jonathan Banks.
For Best Documentary, Yance Ford’s Strong Island and Sabaah Folayan’s Whose Streets? were nominated and for Breakthrough Series, FX’s Atlanta and Netflix’s Dear White People were among the nominees
The Gothams will be handed out at a ceremony set for Nov. 28 at Cipriani Wall Street in downtown Manhattan. The full list of nominations for the 2016 IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards follows.
