Deadline is reporting that Gina Prince-Bythewood will direct and reteam with her ‘Beyond The Lights’ star Gugu Mbatha-Raw in ‘An Untamed State,’ an adaptation of Roxane Gay‘s debut novel.
Prince-Bythewood and Gay will co-write the script for Fox Searchlight, which will distribute the film. Michael De Luca will produce through his Michael De Luca Productions banner with Prince-Bythewood; Mindy Schultheis and Michael Hanel are attached as exec producers.
The novel tells the powerful, unflinching story of a Haitian-American woman kidnapped for ransom in front of her husband and child. It shows her captivity as her father refuses to pay and her husband, who fights for her release over thirteen days. The novel explores the privilege that made her a target and the strength she must draw on to survive and reclaim her life.
Besides Beyond the Lights, Prince-Bythewood’s previous films include Love and Basketball and The Secret Life of Bees, and along with husband Reggie Rock Bythewood, they are currently exec producing the 10-hour event series Shots Fired for Fox, Imagine Television and Undisputed Cinema.
Mbatha-Raw most recently starred with Will Smith in the NFL head injury drama Concussion and in Amma Asante‘s period drama Belle. The British native will next be seen in Gary Ross’ Free State of Jones opposite Matthew McConaughey.
Prince-Bythewood, Mbatha-Raw and De Luca are represented by CAA; Prince-Bythewood is lawyered by Nina Shaw and Gordon M. Bobb at Del, Shaw, Moonves; Mbatha-Raw is managed by Authentic Talent and Literary and also repped by UK-based Curtis Brown Group.
