March 6, 2012
From ‘Friday’ to ‘Are We There Yet? to ‘Barbershop’ and countless other films, Ice Cube has been part of several successful franchises. Along with his ‘Are We There Yet?’ TV series on TBS, which already has filmed over 90 episodes, and his ‘Straight Outta L.A’ documentary, the Los Angeles native is comfortable wearing many hats as an actor, director, and producer.
Coming up next for him is the action comedy ’21 Jump Street,’ which opens on March 16 and stars Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Brie Larson, Rob Riggle, DeRay Davis, and Dave Franco.
An adaptation of the 80s TV series, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are more than ready to leave their adolescent problems behind. Joining the police force and the secret Jump Street unit, they use their youthful appearances to go undercover in a local high school. As they trade in their guns and badges for backpacks, Schmidt and Jenko risk their lives to investigate a violent and dangerous drug ring. But they find that high school is nothing like they left it just a few years earlier and neither expects that they will have to confront the terror and anxiety of being a teenager again and all the issues they thought they had left behind.
Ice Cube plays Captain Dickson, the police captain. In the TV series, the captain was played by Steven Williams.
In speaking exclusively with Blackfilm.com, Ice Cube talks about his role in ’21 Jump Street,’ working with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, the status on his TV show Are We There Yet?, why there aren’t more black films on the big screen, and his next film, which is another sequel to the ‘Friday’ franchise.
