Deadline is reporting that Jay Ellis (Insecure) is among the latest additions to the “Top Gun: Maverick,”the sequel to the 1986 original “Top Gun.”

He joins Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit), Charles Parnell (The Last Ship), Bashir Salahuddin( GLOW), Danny Ramirez (Assassination Nation), and Monica Barbaro (The Good Cop) in the ensemble opposite Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer (as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky), Glen Powell, Jennifer Connelly and Miles Teller, who were previously announced.

This latest project will be set in a world of drone technology and will explore the end of the era of dogfighting, with Cruise portraying a flight instructor.

McKenzie will play the daughter of Connelly’s character. Parnell, who just played a similar role on TNT’s The Last Ship, will play an admiral. Ellis, Ramirez and Barbaro will play Top Gun pilots with Salahuddin playing an engineer. Barbara will also play Teller’s love interest.

Joseph Kosinski will direct the film with script by Peter Craig, Justin Marks and Eric Warren Singer. Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the first film, is back with Cruise and Skydance’s David Ellison

Top Gun: Maverick will hit theaters on July 12, 2019.
